Kinda like him, he's feisty.

The warmth of her body called to me. Wrapping my arm tighter around her, I nuzzled her neck and sighed. Then I heard a muted crack. My eyes opened as I realized someone was outside the cabin. As quietly as I could, I put a hand over Hattie's mouth and woke her. Her eyes popped open as fear crossed her face. Placing a finger over my mouth, I removed my hand from her. Grabbing our clothes, I tossed hers on the bed and dressed myself.

Worry drifted over me through our mate bond. I tried to reassure her. It was the council's retrievers outside the cabin, and while being taken in wouldn't be pleasant, they wouldn't kill us.

Are you sure? Hattie's voice appeared in my mind. The shock on her face probably matched my own.

Before I could respond, the front door burst open. My beast urged me to hold my ground and fight, even if I died protecting my mate, but I dropped to my knees with hands on my head as ordered. The last thing I wanted to do was cause Hattie to be harmed by resisting. Zip ties dug into my wrists as they restrained my arms behind my back.

When the leader pulled out the negation collar, I growled deep in my chest. My body fought to get free, to escape before they locked that nasty device on me, but I was no match for four specially trained retrievers, not now that they had the upper hand. When the metal clicked around my neck, it sapped the strength out of me.

Arms hooked under mine and lifted me to my feet. Before I could look back to check on Hattie, they were dragging me out of the little cabin. Pulling the rest of my strength, I dug in my heels and threw my weight at just the right moment so I could see her through the doorway. Two female retrievers used less force to escort her out and into a different vehicle. They shoved me inside and three of them packed themselves into the back with me.

"All of this for little ole' me? I'm honored you decided four of you were enough."

"Shut up." One of the men snarled at me.

"Ah, and where would the fun in that be?"

The male on my left snatched my hair and smashed my head into the window, a long crack forming in the glass. "He told you to shut the fuck up. It's bad enough I have to listen to your smart mouth, but you reek of mating. I can't find a mate, and refuse to go against the council's wishes of finding a human female, so the last thing I want to do is sit in this enclosed space smelling your mate's arousal all over you." He slammed me against the glass again, making the crack run further.

Before I could make a smartass retort, something bit into my upper arm. I saw the needle disappear as everything around me distorted.

"Was that necessary?"

"Probably not, but I'm in a shitty mood.
